Arm and Leg Massage Therapy Techniques for Babies

Sphere: Related Content
Your baby will benefit from therapeutic massage not only on the torso but also in the arms and legs. Here are some massage therapy techniques you can apply on your baby while at home in Snellville and Gwinett GA.

For arm and leg massage, your baby need not be unclothed. Since you will be massaging his buttocks, too, make sure that your baby is not wearing thick disposable diapers, though. Perhaps cloth briefs would do for the duration of the massage session.

Make sure your baby is in a good mood, not irritable. Do this when it’s not very close to nap time or feeding time. Place your baby on a cushioned but firm surface where there is no danger of him rolling off by accident.

Take your baby’s hand. Stroke the palm from the wrist down to each finger. When you reach the end of a finger, roll it gently. Turn the hand over and repeat the massage on the back of the hand.

Use your own fingers to draw circles around your baby’s wrist bones.

Gently grasp your baby’s arm from beneath the armpits. Make slow gentle milking movements downwards to the wrist, paying special attention to the elbow crease.

Roll your baby’s arm gently between your palms.

Carefully raise your baby’s arm above his head. Coax him into it until he relaxes and allows it. Using a firm but gentle touch that should not be tickling, stroke your baby’s arm from the wrist to the armpit cavity.

Take your baby by the wrist and bring his arm down to his side, then bring his palm to the opposite collarbone and return it to his side. Do this five times.

Do all the hand and arm massages and movements on both the right and left hands and arms of your baby.

Take your baby’s foot. Stroke your fingers down its top to each of the toes. Roll the end of each toe gently.

Press your thumbs all over the soles of your baby’s foot.

Use your own fingers to draw circles around your baby’s ankle bones.

Gently grasp your baby’s leg from the top of the thigh. Make slow gentle milking movements downwards to the ankle, paying special attention to the knee crease.

Roll your baby’s leg gently between your palms.

Lift your baby’s leg by the ankle and bend the knee gently. Repeat five times.

Do all the foot and leg massages and movements on both feet and legs of your baby.

Hold one of your baby’s feet in each of your hands. Alternately cross your baby’s legs right over left and left over right. Repeat five times.

Hold your baby’s right wrist in your right hand and his left foot on your left hand. Carefully bring his hand and foot together over his belly button, then return his hand to his side and his foot to the surface of the bed. Repeat this five times then switch to the other hand and foot.

Put both of your hands under your baby’s buttocks and massage them gently. Slide your palms down the backs of your baby’s legs to his feet. Gently shake his feet before letting go.

After giving your baby therapeutic massage, it is your turn to relax. Get your own Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, hot stone massage therapy or sports massage therapy from a professional massage spa. If your next baby is on the way, you can get pregnancy massage therapy instead. Perhaps you can get massage gift cards for yourself and your partner. Choose a conveniently located spa in Snellville and Gwinett GA.

The Importance Of Licensed Massage Therapy

Sphere: Related Content
With a range of national massage therapy professional regulations, and states with little to no professional therapy requirements, it is easy for consumers to get lost. But quality licensed massage therapy as performed by a true professional is essential to getting not only the best results, but the safest as well.

Many people looking for massage therapy services are not even aware that they should be looking for licensed professionals. The incongruity between state requirements and a lack of federal regulation has resulted in confusion for the massage-buying public. And though it is in no way practical for a potential client to research every detail of his or her state's laws regarding the requirements for licensed therapists, there are some questions a consumer can ask of a prospective therapist before committing to his or her care, and there are some additional steps that can be taken to further research qualifications for a given therapist.

Questions For Consumers To Ask

Starting very simply, ask outright

* Are you licensed in massage therapy?

* Who granted your license?

* Is your license valid in this state?

* Where did you complete your training in massage therapy?

* What did your training include?

* If you are interested in specialized massage therapies, ask about the therapist's background in specific types of massage. You might ask, do you specialize in any types of massage? Do you have specialized certifications?

* Are you certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB)?

It is important to understand that not all states have a requirement for licensure to practice massage therapy; only 37 states and the District of Columbia have requirements regulating it. While this means that a therapist may not be legally required to hold a license, it does not mean that receiving therapy from an untrained "therapist" or "masseuse" is a good idea. If the answer to the first question above is 'no', ask 'why not', and continue to ask what training and certification (such as an NCBTMB certificate) proves his or her professional abilities and expertise. Certification by the NCBTMB and membership in a professional organization (namely, the American Massage Therapy Association, or AMTA) can be taken as a respectable substitute for a state license, as these are the standards that are used by most states that require licensed massage therapy for the licensing of massage therapists (just be sure the certification is current and in good standing).

Certain safeguards online can be used to double-check information as provided by a massage therapist. In most states, licensing status for licensed massage therapy providers is accessible through state databases, and the AMTA can also be queried regarding certification status of individuals. Of course, an easy online search is a quick way to determine whether a training program looks legitimate as well.

Surely, taking the steps to learn about licensed massage therapy does take some added effort, but the time is worthwhile; after all, more than relaxation is at stake, health and safety are as well.

How A Massage Therapy Picture Can Inspire You

Sphere: Related Content
The line about how a picture can paint a thousand words couldn't be more true with a massage therapy picture. What exactly can you do with a massage therapy picture?

What You Can Use It For

A massage therapy picture is one way of informing clients about who you are, what you do and the services you offer in your massage clinic. Most people would naturally think that a massage therapy picture can be used only for marketing and advertising. A good picture however is first and foremost an image and reputation building tool. You simply have to post a massage therapy picture strategically to make the best use of it. The most common places to put a picture would be on a website, brochure, business card or promotional ad.

Where to Get Pictures

Some massage therapists can use royalty free images which are readily available online for them to use in their massage therapy business. You can easily do that too but it is always a better idea to take your own pictures. You are, after all, talking about your business and you would like people to see the real set up of your services.

You can take your own massage therapy picture of your own clinic. All you need is a good light and a high quality camera. It would also make a lot of sense to shoot numerous angles of just one area or pose so you can easily choose the best massage therapy picture to use.

People Pictures

Massage, by its very nature, is person-oriented. Thus, it's only a must that you include people in your photos. The best kind of promotional pictures for your web site would be actual shots of people undergoing a treatment or service. It would be tempting to use beautiful models for a massage therapy picture promotional shot. It would however be better if you asked permission from real patients and took shots of them. This would give potential clients a glimpse of men, women and children from all walks of life enjoying your services.

Other Pictures

There are also many other massage therapy picture subjects you can use. Promotional ads and website backgrounds can feature relaxing pictures that can send out the message that your services promote a soothing and healing experience. You could also take a massage therapy picture of your staff and equipment to make people know that they are in good hands and in a good facility.

Your Picture

It would seem that household names in almost any area of life have their pictures on their products. It may not be such a good idea to have your picture splashed everywhere especially if you are not yet as well known as you would want to be. It might be good though to at least have your picture on your business card. Your massage therapy picture on your card is a personal touch that many people would appreciate.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome And Massage Therapy

Sphere: Related Content
In my San Antonio Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice I often treat pain from various syndromes including Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Like many painful conditions Thoracic Outlet Syndrome responds very well to massage therapy and bodywork.

What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Though many people with this condition think they may have just "slept wrong" and awakened with a numb hand, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is the name given to a group of painful nerve impingement conditions in which the nerve bundle to the arm (brachial plexus) is placed under abnormal pressure by the muscles in the front of the neck (scalenes), by the collar bone and first rib, or the pectoralis minor muscle in the upper chest/armpit area. The most common symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome are pain and numbness in the arm and hand of the affected side; however, those who suffer from this condition may have only pain or only numbness. In some cases Thoracic Outlet Syndrome may also encompass a dangerous restriction of blood flow. Most of the time the symptoms are on one side, but may affect both sides in some cases.

What is the cause of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

There are a number of causes for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome including whiplash injuries from motor vehicle accidents and sports injuries. Postural issues, especially a forward head posture like that maintained by office workers and computer users, can also trigger the onset of this syndrome. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome may also be the result of over stressing the muscles in the thoracic outlet area during exercise, or by impact injuries to the shoulder or upper chest area. Additionally, though it is rare, a "cervical rib" may be the blame for this condition.

Massage Therapy and Bodywork for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

There are many ways that massage therapy and bodywork can be used to treat Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. The massage therapist will employ a number of techniques to relieve the condition. For example, the massage therapist may use Neuromuscular Therapy or Trigger Point Therapy to eliminate myofascial trigger points in the scalene muscles and other muscle of the front of the neck. The massage therapist could also use Myofascial Release techniques or Deep Tissue Massage techniques to release fascial adhesions in the area of the thoracic outlet and surrounding tissues while also using Muscle Energy Techniques to gently lengthen the scalene muscles and other affected neck, chest, and shoulder muscles. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome also responds well to positional release therapies such as Ortho-Bionomy which work with the body's nervous system to release muscles and improve joint movement in the area. Ortho-Bionomy is particularly effective when the nerves are being compressed by the clavicle (collar bone) and first rib. In addition to working on the scalene muscles and pectoralis minor muscle it may be necessary to provide therapy for other muscles adjacent to, or opposing the scalenes or pectoralis minor to improve muscular balance. Treatment for postural issues may also be needed. Comprehensive treatment with massage and bodywork, in conjunction with a home program of stretching and exercise, usually helps to completely resolve Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Other Treatments for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

While massage therapy and bodywork are an excellent treatment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome there are other treatments you should discuss with your physician:

1) Muscle Relaxer medications;

2) Anti-inflammatory medications;

3) Surgery

Other Names for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

1) Anterior Scalene Syndrome;

2) Costoclavicular Syndrome;

3) Pectoralis Minor Syndrome;

4) Thoracic Inlet Syndrome

The information in this article has been provided for information purposes only. It is not meant to provide a medical diagnosis, only a licensed physician may diagnose Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. If you feel that you have the symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome please see your physician for a proper diagnosis and plan of treatment which may include massage therapy and bodywork. There are a number of more serious conditions that resemble Thoracic Outlet Syndrome that could require immediate medical intervention.

Massage Therapy for Holistic Wellness

Sphere: Related Content
Massage is a fantastic rejuvenator for every part of the body that massage therapy is administered. This amazing type of therapy is natural and holistic in nature, positively affecting the system's physiological and psychological states of being. After a great massage session, the body feels good for days after. But what is more important about the ideal massage is how the mind responds to it.

There are various types of massage, such as the conventional facial, they incorporate in beauty parlors and spas. Sugar massage, acupressure, Shaitsu massage, Swedish massage, Thai massage, Deep Tissue massage and so on. Each type of massage bestows wellness on a person's entire system. Massage therapy is unlike most other forms of therapy, it is actually more intuitive in nature. A good masseuse works his fingers on the body of his client and immediately comes to know how to make him relax and forget his cares and worries.

A massage, when properly administered, can help the body immensely. Here are some of the benefits of massage therapy:

Massage improves general blood circulation in the body. Loosening the muscles and letting the body relax, it lets the blood flow freely and unhampered within the body.

The skin becomes clearer as the blood circulation improves in the body.

A good massage can regulate vital functions of the body such as lowering the heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress and anxiety and give a feeling of well-being to the client.

Certain forms of massage are known to bestow healing properties on one who is ailing. If there is an internal injury in the body, such as pain or inflammation, a massage can help remarkably reduce, even destroy the pain. Since a massage goes to the core of the problem, the patient immediately starts feeling better.

Some Ayurvedic massages are known to bring back the life and strength to weakened muscles. Of course, this type of massage takes a lot of sittings to show effect, but there are many people who have recovered completely from their condition after such massages.

Below is also a list of how massages can help a patient on the mental level:

A good massage is known to 'lift spirits'. This actually means, it enhances the amount of endorphins released in the system, thereby giving the person a 'happy', 'feel-good' attitude!

A nice massage puts the patient totally at ease, inducing a sleep-like, calm state in him. This drains away the stress, worries and depression from his being.

Touch is one of the most important senses of the body. The masseuse's act of touching and kneading the body in gentle rhythmical strokes can soothe the patient's frayed nerves, allowing him to relax completely and forget the tensions of the day. Hence, the massage can nourish and nurture the patient into a feeling of happiness and contentment.

Many patients have reported of feeling mentally very alert for days after a good massage therapy session. Once the person's mind calms down, he lets go of all his subconscious psychological fears and worries. This 'de-clutters' the mind of various types of confusion, which makes him think more clearly and alertly for a long time after the therapy session.

The meditative state that some types of massage induce in the receiver helps develop a peaceful and serene attitude in him.

Some studies suggest, though do not prove conclusively, that massages even help develop immunity in the person's system. This happens as massages help bring down the cortisol level in the body, that usually diminish the body's strength to fight against disease and illness. When cortisol levels are brought down, these studies indicate, the body can ward off its enemies more effectively.

Though a good massage can give various benefits, you should make sure to go to the right masseuse in order to gain the full benefit from it.

How To Best Choose A Massage Therapist

Sphere: Related Content
Choosing a massage therapist is just as important as the type of massage you receive. When it comes to finding a massage therapist you will want to make sure that the therapist is licensed and has the proper credentials. You should ask them what licensing they have and also ask them if they are a member of any trade associations. One governing board that you can check with to verify a massage therapists certification if the American Massage Therapy Association. They will also be able to point you to a massage therapist in you area who is licensed and certified.

If you've never had a professional massage before, you may be understandably nervous. One thing to consider is the fact that most professional massage therapists will allow you a free test massage. This won't be a full session, but it will be enough to let you know if you feel that you can receive any benefits from the therapist. This is a great way to test the massage therapist's services as well as see if you feel comfortable with him or her. It's very important to make sure that you are contracting the services of a licensed, professional massage therapist. Make sure that you check their credentials with the American Massage Therapy Association.

In addition to checking with massage organizations, many people also find massage therapists through word of mouth. If you have a friend or family member who swears by their therapist, then you may just want to give them a call and set up an appointment.

When you find a massage therapist that you are interested in, it is important to arrange a session where you can interview the practitioner. You should never agree to a massage from someone with whom you feel uncomfortable. The key to a successful massage is relaxation, and if you don't feel comfortable with the massage therapist, you will not be relaxed. Take your time and choose your therapist carefully. Interview them and ask them questions. If you don't feel comfortable then choose another therapist. When you find the therapist that best meets your needs, you'll appreciate the fact that you took the time to find someone you feel relaxed with.

Some things to take into consideration when you are choosing a massage therapist is whether or not they have open communication with you. This means that before the therapist touches your body, they should have a clear understanding of where you are feeling tight muscles, tension, or pain. Ask yourself whether or not the massage therapist is taking the time to find out how you feel.

You should also feel comfortable with the degree of privacy that the massage therapist provides for you. There is no need for the therapist to see you completely disrobed. If you don't feel that your privacy is being respected, then you should consider finding another massage therapist. The therapist should respect your privacy, from the time you disrobe, throughout the massage, and afterwards. Finally, it's important that you feel comfortable enough with your therapist to let him or her know if you are sensing any pain or discomfort throughout the session. The ideal situation is that the therapist will continually ask for your feedback on the degree of pressure they are using for the massage. However, if they do not ask, be sure to let them know if you are experiencing any discomfort.

This means that you probably won't be allowed to publicly practice massage techniques if you haven't taken the board exam. Swedish Massage Therapy

Sphere: Related Content
What is Swedish massage therapy? It is a technique designed to help the muscles in the body relax by applying pressure and then rubbing it in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

Unlike other methods of massage therapy, this was first developed in the 18th century. It is also called the “classic massage” because it represents the Western way of relaxing those muscles.

The main purpose of the Swedish massage then and now is still the same. This is to increase the flow of oxygen in the blood so toxins are released from the muscles. These toxins include lactic and uric acid as well as metabolic waste.

When this happens, circulation is increased without increasing the heart load. The ligaments and tendons are both stretched keeping them supple and pliable. This also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves at the same time. As a result, stress is reduced.

There are various techniques in the Swedish massage. Some examples of these are friction, effleurage, kneading, tapping, long strokes, vibrations and shaking motions. The therapist may use the fingertips, hands or palm to achieve maximum effect and of course, a little bit of bending and stretching.

During the session, the person has to undress and lie down on the mattress. He or she is then covered with a blanket and the only time it is opened is when the therapist has to massage that region of the body with oil so this will be absorbed by the body.

If you do not feel comfortable about being nude, bring some old loose clothes because the oil may stain fabrics.

A Swedish massage usually lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. Before the session begins, the therapist may check your complexion then choose the type of oil to use based on your skin type. If ever you want to increase or decrease the pressure, just say so and the therapist will adjust accordingly.

In the room, you may hear some soothing music playing in the background as this has been known to help people unwind. If you don’t like it, just tell them so they can play something else or just turn it off.

You might notice that the therapist would like to chat while working on you. Just like the music, if you don’t feel like talking, just tell them. Don’t worry, they won’t be offended.

Lastly, some people sleep during Swedish massage therapy. Again, that is perfectly fine because it has been known to happen.

Swedish massage therapy is considered to be the foundation of other types of Western massages. This is because the principles behind it are the same as when you try sports massage, seated chair massage, hot stone therapy, deep tissue massage or aromatherapy. If you like the way you were treated, try out the others the next time you drop by.

Before going for a session, check with your doctor if it is safe for you to do. You should also avoid eating a heavy meal before going in.

Swedish massage therapy is good. Once the session is over, you will feel relaxed and invigorated. Since you will feel thirsty afterwards, you better drink up. Some places offer water while others hand out warm tea. Whenever you are ready, it is time for you to get dressed and head on home.

Massage Therapy: More than Just Relaxation

Sphere: Related Content

Left and right massage therapy clinics are setting up shop in the Metro. Perhaps more and more people are getting into the healthy living trend that has taken over Hollywood.

More than just being a stress and pain reliever, massage therapy has a lot more benefits to offer that actually contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Though not known to many, massage therapy lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, facilitates faster recovery from injury and healing and even improves posture. Not only that, it also enhances attentiveness and flexibility in an individual. Certainly, these are things that lie beyond the relaxation it is known for. This is perhaps why massage therapy as an industry has become so big nowadays.

Through constant application of pressure, massage therapy relaxes blood vessels and decreases systolic and diastolic blood pressure, decreases the level of cortisol or stress hormones and prevents anxiety and depression. These reduce the threat of heart attack and create a clear mind and body making the individual more dynamic and active. Massage also helps relax the muscles itself, allowing people to become more energized. This is the reason why people are so much into massage therapy. It rejuvenates the body from all the stress that we encounter everyday.

Since massage decreases one’s stress levels, it also lessens the possibility of an individual’s vulnerability to pathogens by increasing the body’s cytotoxic capacity. When the number of active natural killer cells increases, our body’s line of defense becomes stronger and more stable and becomes more effective in shielding us from illnesses.

Faster recovery from injury is another benefit of massage therapy because it relaxes the muscles and improves circulation of important body fluids making it easier for the body to deliver nutrients to vital organs and other parts of the body. It also initiates pain management when the injured part is undergoing treatment since it activates the parasympathetic nervous system causing the production of endorphins which are natural pain killers thus speeding up the healing process.

Other than these good effects, massage therapy can correct bad posture which causes pain and stress in muscles that can lead to the body’s breakdown. It eases the tension in worn out muscles, soothes pressure points and increases the flexibility in joints by stimulating the production of body fluids and lubricants, so as to allow the body to position itself in a painless way. Thus, the individual can move freely and carry out daily tasks without hassle.

As shown in electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, regular massage can also improve a person’s mathematical ability due to increased attentiveness because of the elimination of stress. The absence of stress imposes less pressure on an individual resulting to a more concentrated and focused mind, free of worries and distracting thoughts.

Massage therapy may be considered as a simple recreational activity however it does more than just restoring one’s vitality because it lessens or even eliminates the dangers imposed on a person’s health. It also helps an individual loosen up because it releases unwanted energy and leaves the person with a renewed outlook and refreshed senses.

Study even shows that HIV patients who have regular massage therapy sessions notice an improvement in their condition. This proves that massage therapy is not a waste of time rather it is an individual’s key to having a sound mind and body.

A Choice between Swedish and Ayurvedic Massage Methods

Sphere: Related Content

Various influences in massage therapy have cropped up leading to the creation of several methods that differ in techniques but offer the same health benefits. The Swedish and Ayurvedic massage both have different origins and use contrasting styles but contribute a lot to achieve a healthy and relaxed body. With all the kinds of massage therapy programs available today, it has become really difficult for people to choose.

The Swedish Massage, which is also known as the classic or traditional massage is the most common massage therapy method and is usually preferred by the majority of people. It is characterized by long and flowing strokes which relax muscles, improve joint flexibility and aid in better circulation.

The first stroke is known as effleurage, involves long, gliding strokes from the neck down to the base of the spine or from the shoulder down to the fingertips. It is also done on the limbs with all strokes directed toward the heart to aid blood and lymphatic flow. The therapist uses his whole hand or a thumb pad. This technique is done for familiarization of the person’s body

Next is petrissage that consists of the gentle lifting of muscles up and away from the bones, then rolling and squeezing them, with a gentle pressure. It generally involves rolling, squeezing, or pressing the muscles to enhance deeper circulation. It increases circulation through eliminating toxins from muscle and nerve tissue.

Friction, the third technique and the most forceful one is characterized by deep circular movements using fingertips applied near bony areas and joints and it relaxes the muscle fiber which enhances flexibility in muscles and joints.

After friction, another technique called tapotement is done. Tapotement is a series of quick forceful movements made by striking or tapping the muscles with the hand. It can be applied with a closed fist, fingertips and the edge of the hand. It releases tension and relieves muscle cramps.

Lastly, the therapist uses vibration or shaking that entails the pressing of hands on the back or limbs and shaking in a rapid motion for a few moments. It improves circulation and muscle contraction and is beneficial to people with low-back pain.

On the other hand, Ayurvedic massage originated from India and its aim is to create harmony and balance within the individual and it aids in the removal of toxins and rejuvenation of the body. It was not practiced publicly until Indian practitioners decided to roam around and give muscle, joint and back massages

Ayurvedic massage is based on a special system that includes the knowledge of Ayurvedic and Greek systems of medicine which is focused on Ayurvedic doshas and marmas or pressure points. Muslim massage techniques were also adapted in this system.

Ayurvedic massage techniques uses specific oils that suit your dosha and depends on your being. One is the Abhyanga-Garshana which comprises of skin brushing followed by an oil massage, Udwarthanam which is a slimming massage that uses herbal powders and the Ayurvedic foot massage which is a deep massage where the therapist uses his feet.

Now with enough knowledge on both Swedish and Ayurvedic massage, a person has of course the privilege to choose among the two which best suits his/her style of relaxation. But with both massages having unique techniques, the choosing part can be a little tricky though.

Massage Therapy - Feels Good

Sphere: Related Content
The known benefits of massage therapy seem increase indefinitely, as doctors, scientists and therapists continue to study its effects. Massage therapy is one of the oldest forms of healing, and is based upon the simple power of human touch. There are many different forms of massage therapy, each bringing unique benefits to the patient. Massages may be performed upon an individual who is standing, sitting in a chair, or most commonly, laying upon a flat surface. The invention of various forms of massage therapy products now allow individual to self-administer massage therapy techniques.

One of the simplest benefits of massage therapy is its ability to evoke relaxation and relieve stress. Individuals who are fatigued, anxious or emotionally distressed can receive tremendous relief at the hands of even the most inexperienced massage therapist. The use of massage oils, creams or lotions can contribute to the relaxing benefits of massage therapy. Such products allow the massage therapists hands to move more freely across the skin, and in many cases contain medicinal ingredients that are absorbed into the skin. The pleasant scents of certain massage oils often add to the relaxing nature of the experience. We offer a full line of Biotone massage oils and creams, scented and unscented, which can significantly contribute to the benefits of massage therapy.

Another benefit of massage therapy is its ability to ease tension, stiffness and pain. When muscles become overworked, certain harmful waste products such as lactic acid may accumulate in the muscles and cause soreness. Massage therapy stimulates the muscles through direct pressure, improving circulation and thereby facilitating the elimination of these waste products.

Massage therapy benefits the lymphatic system as well. Massage therapy, by stimulating lymph nodes, boosts the circulatory and immune systems. This benefits blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion and even skin tone. By bringing fresh oxygen to various tissues of the muscle, skin and in some cases the organ, massage therapy benefits and contributes to the overall health of a patient.

The benefits of massage therapy include a psychological aspect as well. Human touch offers a sense of caring that no other form of expression can equal. By contributing to an overall sense of happiness and well-being, both the psychological and physical health of a massage patient are benefited.

While one can certainly gain results from a single session, the more profound benefits of massage therapy appear after a patient undergoes regular sessions over an extended period of time. Ideally, one should receive massage therapy every single day for the duration of one's life! However, few people can afford this intensity of care. But dont dispaire. Currently, there is a large number of massage therapy products available over-the-counter that allow you to self-administer certain techniques. The Theracane, for example, allows you to deeply massage virtually every part of your back with gentle, relaxed motions. Other examples include sophisticated motorized devices, such as the Pro Power massager, which offers a deep penetrating, therapeutic massage in a lightweight portable package. It is always wise to seek out advice from a licensed massage therapist or chiropractor before committing to a massage therapy product or procedure.

Hot Stone Massage

Sphere: Related Content

In the entire history of massage therapy there has been a great deal of discussion about what type of massage is the most relaxing, therapeutic, or just luxurious. For my money Hot Stone Massage is the most luxurious massage you can get anywhere. Also known as Warm Stone Therapy, Therapeutic Stone Massage, River Stone Massage, or even Hot Rock Therapy, this full-body massage technique may be the ultimate in relaxation massage.

The name "Hot Stone Massage" comes from the use of smooth basalt stones that vary in size from about the size of a golf ball to the size of a computer mouse. When the stones are being used in massage they are heated well above body temperature then lubricated and applied to the client's body in long flowing massage strokes. The penetrating heat of the stones and the pressure of the strokes softens connective tissues and fascia and radiates into your muscles causing stress, tension, and anxiety to melt away leaving you relaxed with enhanced feelings of well-being.

In addition to being very relaxing and almost sinfully luxurious, Hot Stone Massage also has a number of healthy benefits. Hot Stone Massage is great for reducing unhealthy stress, and improving the circulation of both blood and lymph. When combined with trigger point therapy or deep tissue techniques, Hot Stone Massage is great for relieving pain. Also, many people receiving Hot Stone Massage report sleeping more restfully for several days after receiving the massage!

Although many people think of Hot Stone Massage as a toasty treat on a cold day, Hot Stone Massage is great anytime! On a cool winter's day,Hot Stone Massage warms you through and through. On a hot summer day, Hot Stone Massage in a cool massage room is a great release to help you beat the heat.

I'm sure you'll love Hot Stone Massage from the first time you get one. Check with a massage therapist near you to get your Hot Stone Massage today.

What is Aquatic Massage Therapy?

Sphere: Related Content

Aquatic massage therapy involves a gentle, manual massage therapy procedure that utilizes the buoyancy of water in a therapeutic pool. In most cases, aquatic massage therapy benefits a client more because the body experiences an increased range of motion in water than it does outside of the water.

In a therapeutic pool, the massage therapist can guide her client through a series of gentles stretches without the impedance due to joint and muscle pain that the client normally experiences on dry land.

During an aquatic massage, the client floats on his back while the water helps the massage therapist support him. Many times, a floatation device such as a pool noodle is used to support the client's feet while the massage therapist supports the head and neck. Once the client is comfortable in the water, he will benefit from the warm, gentle freedom of motion that can only be found in an aquatic massage.

Aquatic massage therapy uses a variety of massage techniques similar to those used on land. However, this particular kind of massage commonly combines techniques taken from Jahara and Watsu massage.

Jahara massage involves a series of safe joint stretches to help lengthen the spine. The stretches are based on the body's muscle structure and proper alignment.

Watsu massage refers to a series of gentle Shiatsu stretches to enhance flexibility while the client is floating in warm water.

The temperature of the therapeutic pool is normally maintained at 95o F in order to keep the client relaxed and their muscles and joints loose during the aquatic massage session. The temperature and buoyancy of the water as well as the resistance provided by the gentle movements underwater allow the massage therapist to move the client's body through a smooth range of motion without eliciting pain to the client's muscles and joints.

Clients with a reduced range of motion are recommended to undergo aquatic massage therapy. Such therapy can give the client relief from arthritis, osteoarthritis, and post-surgical pain. Massage therapist may also recommend aquatic massage therapy for pregnant women, postpartum women, and clients with any type of nerve damage. Clients who suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia may find aquatic massage therapy to be very relaxing.

Licensure in Massage therapy

Sphere: Related Content

Massage therapy as a profession has come a long way. From the first few years where anyone good with their hands can do the kneading and the massaging to now where only the licensed can perform massages.

With state laws regulating massage therapy clinics, people can now breathe a sigh of relief. No more problems with massage therapists who don’t know how to massage. Now, when you get a massage, you don’t have to be afraid that you will end up having sore muscles and aching bones instead of the relaxed feeling that you are aiming for. Nowadays, you can be assured of a superb service that will be worth every penny that you paid for.

You will find, however, that different laws govern different states. This is because the laws in massage therapy have not yet reached the federal stage. This is the reason why every state has unique regulations. It seems that the government feels that this is an issue that is best dealt with per state and not federally. And the United States is not alone in this regard.

Canada, for instance, only have three provinces that actually enforce massage therapy regulations— British Columbia, Newfoundland and of course, Ontario. Only these three have registered and licensed therapists working in clinics. The other provinces are still non-regulated. This means that anybody can do the job without having to get some training.

Getting regulated is actually advantageous to clients who expect good service. Besides they deserve to put their bodies in the hands of those who know what they are doing. Because of the regulation and additional training, massage therapists do not only act as masseurs but also health advisers and sometimes even doctors.

They can assess and sometimes also respond to medical issues especially if it involves physical wellbeing and injuries. Another benefit in the regulation is that massage therapists are also given identified according to a field of expertise be it shiatsu or the more technical aromatherapy and acupressure.

This however is bad news to massage therapy practitioners who still don’t have the time or the money to avail of the training that is required of them. You see, in order to get a license you need to be able to pass the standards that are set by a group of massage therapy experts. Sometimes, these standards can be very hard to reach.

Industry regulating standards often focus on the education and training. In Canada, for instance, one must need about 3000 hours of training in order to get a license. That is equivalent to years of training. And though massage therapists have the skills to get through these training programs, most of them cannot start because of lack of money and time.

Some of them need the money to support their families and would rather use their earnings to buy food and other necessities than send themselves to training schools. Some feel that the number of experience in the job should also count for something when getting a license.

To answer this problem, many massage therapy organizations have established programs where people who are experienced in the industry can avail of scholarships and free training. Morning and Night classes have also been started to cater to those who have job shifts and have no time to go and study.
